Texture

In order to draw realistically, you must know the techniques to depict the Texture of an object you are rendering.

So what is Texture? It is the look and feel of an object. There are 3 basic surfaces: Hard, Soft, and Rough. These are 7 ways an Artist achieves Texture which can be used separately or combined.

1. Shading- A technique used to represent light and dark on smooth surfaces.

2. Hatching- A technique used to create all kinds of surfaces. It is a series of thin strokes or lines that are more or less parallel.

3. Cross Hatching- A technique used to create shadows and predominately rough Textures. Cross Hatching is created by crossing over hatched lines in the opposite direction.

4. Stippling- A technique used to create rough textures. Stippling is created by a series of dots or spots.

5. Zigzags- A technique used to create rough textures. Zigzags are created with lines made from a combination of diagonal lines. Zigzags can also imply movement.

6. Squiggles- A technique used to create rough Textures, such as plants and trees. Squiggles are formed by a line that curls and loops, overlapping in all different directions.

7. Circles- A technique used to create soft Textures. Circles are created by gently overlapping very small circles using the edge of the pencil, not the tip.

In the next post I will go over the Elements of Shape, Shape, and Form.
