OVERLAPPING
ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE
Class 3- We discussed 2 different ways to achieve depth in a drawing….
- Overlapping
- 1 Point Perspective
OVERLAPPING – Occurs when objects are placed in front of or behind another creating the illusion of depth.
1. Begin by drawing a bottle.
2. Draw a partial bottle behind. Connect on the left side but leave the right side open.
3. Draw the middle bottle in between the front bottle and the back bottle.
4. Connect the back bottle and close the bottom part of the back bottle to complete the illusion.
5. You can draw a table to anchor your bottles.
6. Add shadow to complete picture by casting shadows off the bottles on to the table. I used cross-hatching for the shadows.
ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE– Use a horizon line with a vanishing point used to pivot with a ruler to create depth using one point as its axis.
1. Begin by creating a horizon line and a vanishing point.
2. Using a ruler begin at the vanishing point and pivot your ruler to the desired angle and draw your line.
3. Complete by drawing the next angle, again by placing your ruler on the vanishing point and pivot to the desired angle and draw your line.
4. I’ve drawn mountains in the distance to continue with the illusion.
5. I drew a guideline for telephone poles to be drawn vertical in between the road and the guidelines with the cross drawn horizontally. Remember to bring the distance between poles closer together the closer you get to the mountain or horizon line.
6. I quickly drew “implied” cars coming from the distance toward the foreground.
**NOTE** The above example we drew in class is using the One Point Perspective.
We will discuss using Perspective further in class as well as Overlapping and Foreshortening.
