Drawing and Composing

Class 2– We talked about two important parts of making art; drawing and composing or combining technique with creativity.

Here are 2 ways to practice drawing what you see.

1. Blind Contour Drawing (use your shield)

2. The Check Back Method (1, 2, look at your paper, 4)

Begin drawing simple lines and move to more complex lines and then your surroundings.

* Do not get discouraged, Blind Contour Drawings are not meant to be perfect.

Use the “Check Back Method” to practice drawing. Add a focal point with a pathway that leads (the viewers eye) using lines and shapes. Color the positive and negative space (defined by the use of warm and cool colors) and create a composition that has movement and emotion using “the power of a line” to achieve it.

3. Begin your focal point and initial pathway with warm or cool colors.

4. Complete the rhythm or pathway first by the colors you chose (warm or cool) then color the negative space using the opposite colors (warm or cool)

Lines have the power to evoke emotion.

Horizontal– Serene and Tranquil

Vertical– Strength and Power

Diagonal– Action and Movement

Free Form– Carefree
