2 Point Perspective “Interior Spaces”

Last semester, you designed a 2 Point Perspective “Cityscape.” This semester we are going to build upon your skill set and create a “Interior Space.” To refresh your memory, look at the diagram above. Refer to this when creating your own room. These are the basic rules you must follow in order to correctly depict your space. Use this post as a guide, not a step by step lesson. I kept it simple, using basic pieces of furniture. Get creative. Design, build, and decorate your “Interior Space.” Follow the rules and have some fun! For this project, you will need a pencil, ruler, Mono Elastomer Eraser, Kneaded Eraser, 9×12 Bristol Paper, and .01, .03, .05 mechanical pens.

Step 1- Measure 2 inches, from each side, and draw a vertical line. Measure 3 inches down, from the top of both vertical lines, and put a dot. Line up your ruler, horizontally, on the dots and draw a horizontal line, only on the outer edges of the vertical lines, or margins, of your drawing. Do not draw the horizontal line across the page. That is your Horizon Line. Put a dot on the horizon line on the left and right side. *This will be your 2 Vanishing Points. If the Vanishing Points are not placed on the same spot, of the horizon line, it will make your room look more interesting. Look at the spacing of the 2 Vanishing Points, on the picture above.

Step 2- Draw a vertical line, off center. I measured 3 inches out from the vertical line on the left side. *Draw the vertical line lightly. I measured 2 1/4 inches down from the top and the line is 3 1/4 inches long. Put your pencil and ruler on a Vanishing Point on the right side and swivel to the top of the vertical line and draw the left side of the ceiling. Then, put your pencil on the Vanishing Point, on the left side, and swivel to the top of the vertical line and draw the right side of the ceiling. Repeat the steps, except draw the lines from the bottom, of the vertical line, to draw the left and right side of the floor.

Step 3- Draw two straight vertical lines. Make sure you leave room to draw the nightstand next to the bed. Connect the 2 vertical lines, from the Vanishing Point, on the left. Put your ruler on the right Vanishing Point and swivel to the left vertical line and draw a line, a little above the floor, that will be the left side of the mattress. Make sure you leave enough room for the headboard. Next, put your pencil on the left Vanishing Point and swivel to the point where the mattress touches the headboard and put a dot on the right vertical line. (You can draw the line, which is the side of your mattress that touches the headboard. I drew the line on Step 4.) Put your pencil on the right Vanishing Point and swivel to the dot or line, you just made on the right vertical line, and draw the right side of the mattress, lightly. *All of the diagonal lines, on the bed and every angle, comes from a Vanishing Point. All of the left angles come from the Vanishing Point on the right. All of the right angles come from the Vanishing Point on the left. The only lines, that do not, are the straight vertical lines.

Step 4- Refer to the pictures above to build a bed. The same steps would apply to a sofa, table, etc. *Remember- All of the diagonal lines, on the bed and every angle, comes from a Vanishing Point. Every left angle comes from the Vanishing Point on the right. Every right angle comes from the Vanishing Point on the left. The only lines, that do not, are the straight vertical lines.

Step 5- These pictures illustrate the steps to finish the bed and draw the pillows.

Remember- All of the diagonal lines, on the bed and every angle in the drawing, comes from a Vanishing Point. Every left angle comes from the Vanishing Point on the right. Every right angle comes from the Vanishing Point on the left. The only lines, that do not, are the straight vertical lines. If your vertical lines are not straight, the drawing will look wrong.

Step 6- The blanket, on the bed, is drawn using the Vanishing Points, on both sides.

Step 7- Draw the nightstand. *Notice you find the middle of the nightstand by drawing an X across the nightstand. The center of the X is the middle of the nightstand, or anything you need to divide in half, when drawing Perspectives. *Notice, the size of the knobs are drawn using Perspective, as your guide. The knob’s sizes are measured by 2 guide lines that come from the left Vanishing Point.

Step 8- Draw the light, picture, and window. Dab with a Kneaded Eraser to pick up extra graphite. *The mechanical pens will not work on graphite.

Step 9- Ink, put in details and texture. Take a Kneaded Eraser and pick up any excess graphite. Touch up with ink, if necessary.
